Assessment

This section will highlight important aspects of assessment included in the National Protocol for Assessment (NPR). As noted in Module 3, it is important to have copies of the NPR and CAPS document to hand during mentoring.

Assessment is an important process of collecting, analysing and interpreting information to assist teachers, parents and other stakeholders to make decisions about the progress of learners.

  • Assessment should provide an indication of learner achievement.
  • Various forms of assessment should be used to ensure that adequate evidence of achievement is collected.
  • Learners should know in advance the knowledge and skills being assessed.
  • Timeous feedback should be provided to learners to enhance the learning experience.
  • Assessment should be both informal and formal.
