Informal assessment

It is important to clarify the difference between informal and formal assessment to student teachers. Your student teachers may have theoretical knowledge, but they need a better understanding of practice.

Informal (or daily) assessment is used to assess for learning.

This is done through teacher observation and teacher-learner interactions during lessons.
It may be as simple as stopping during the lesson to observe learners or to discuss with the learners how learning is progressing.
It should be used to provide feedback to learners and teachers, close the gaps in learners’ knowledge and skills and to improve teaching.
It builds towards formal assessment.

  • Highlight the importance of developing questioning skills at various stages during the lesson.
  • Provide examples of how to construct questions and to analyse the outcomes of asking questions.
  • Emphasise the need to ask lower and higher-order questions (eg, Bloom’s Taxonomy).
  • Ask student teachers to include these questions within their lesson plans.
