Allowing student teachers to be active in the assessment process does not mean that you expect them to do your marking for you!

- Explain that the marking memo, while essential as a guideline, is not set in stone.
- Impress upon them that that the marking guideline should always be completed while setting the assessment and not when marking starts.
- Provide opportunities to ‘team mark’. Mark a suitable section of the assessment with your student teacher and then allow them to complete the rest of the assessments while moderating their progress.
- Provide an opportunity for them to set a mock assessment and mark it independently – in their own time.
- Observe how they give feedback on the assessment in the classroom.
