Pedagogical knowledge practices - Lesson planning

![]()
| A common frustration for both mentor teachers and student teachers is the variety of lesson planning formats student teachers are expected to follow. Each subject may have a different format. Most teachers will agree that, in practice, lessons are not planned in the detail expected of student teachers. |
| Planning is a complex yet essential part of the teaching process that changes over time as teachers gain more hands-on experience. |
Telling them that their particular lesson plan format is ‘ridiculous’ and has ‘nothing to do’ with how to plan for every day teaching is not helpful. Student teachers are still in training. They need to follow the lesson plans given to them by their university supervisor. They need to think deliberately, in detail and step-by-step about how the lesson will be presented. A carefully guided planning tool provides the necessary focus as well as input into their reflection, after the lesson. Show them examples of how you do lesson planning. The more you share your own lesson planning, the more your student teacher has the opportunity to learn. Demonstrate how to work smarter not harder. This will stand them in good stead once they start teaching. |
