PCK - Overview 3

Pedagogical Knowledge Practices

In order to develop PCK the student teacher needs practice. The 11 ‘Basic Competences of a Beginner Teacher’ must be translated into practices which the student teacher needs to understand and master. The mentor teacher explains, directs, guides and reflects on these practices. The student teacher needs your assistance to develop questioning and problem solving skills and to provide information and guidance for assessment. Discussions about expectations around teaching practices and different viewpoints should form part of your mentoring sessions.

Ideas and practical examples of how to mentor student teachers in pedagogical knowledge practices will be covered in the next three units of this module.

Before moving on to the next unit (4.1. Pedagogical knowledge practices), read the following article as preparation: Hudson, et al, 2015: https://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/EJ1064621.pdf

Focus on the results and discussion section and note how the pedagogical knowledge practices listed may be linked to developing PCK.
