Classroom management 1

Effective classroom management allows teachers proper control over their classroom and is imperative for a positive and flourishing learning environment. Few student teachers are capable of effective classroom management and need much guidance and support.

As an experienced teacher, you have developed your own style of discipline and it may be difficult to explain to a student teacher exactly what it is that you do. There are many philosophies and styles of discipline and you should advise your student teacher to do what works best for them to develop their own style. However, as a mentor teacher you should provide basic guidelines to use, including ‘tricks of the trade’.

Student teachers must understand that the principal and other members of staff will expect them to take care of their own discipline problems and report only severe misbehaviour or habitual offenders.
Any teacher who constantly needs colleagues to step in to assist with classroom management has already lost the battle!
