Promoting dialogue 1

To promote dialogue, the following skills must be used: Listening, questioning, clarification, use of open questions, giving feedback and appropriate non-verbal communication (DoE, 2008).

 

 

Provide as many opportunities as you can to allow for regular, comfortable, formal and informal dialogue between you and your student teacher. These may include:

  • Formal mentor teacher - student teacher meetings
  • A tea break or lunch together at a time when the student teacher needs to talk
  • An opportunity to spend time together reviewing the results of a task or planning for the next one
  • Passing on information about upcoming professional events
  • Information about ways to gain the support of key individuals
  • Suggestions for acquiring scarce resources
  • Sharing expertise
  • Guiding the student teacher in the learning process
