Promoting dialogue 2
Dialogue is a two-way interaction. Honour the student teachers' right to reach their own solutions. Allow them to articulate their thoughts safely and in a trusting environment.
- Focus on the student teacher's feelings and needs rather than jumping to problem solving.
- When a problem has been raised by the student teacher, ask, “What do you think you would like to do about this situation?” or “How would you like me to help?”
- If you are not comfortable with what the student teacher wants to do, ask yourself “Why?” before you decide whether to say so or not.
- If what the student teacher wants to do is not possible, explain so gently, with an apology. Ask what alternative solutions would make the student teacher comfortable.
Encourage critical thinking through questions and reflections.
