The personal attributes of a mentor teacher

Purpose

The purpose of this unit is to explore the personal attributes of a good mentor. As is true of many occupations, the best performer is not necessarily the best manager or trainer. The same applies to mentorship. We need to acknowledge the fact that a good classroom teacher is not necessarily a good mentor teacher.

Outcomes

After completing this unit, you will have:

  • Identified which attributes and skills are necessary for a mentor teacher
  • Identified your own potential as a possible mentor teacher
  • Become familiar with Goleman’s ideas about emotional intelligence (EQ) and empathy
