Phase 3: Enabling

Enabling Phase

This phase offers the greatest opportunities to nurture learning and development for botht he mentor teacher and the student teacher.

DO

Look out for weaknesses and obstacles that may derail the relationship.

The enabling phase takes longer to complete than the other mentoring phases, for this is when the greatest learning between mentoring partners takes place. The aim is not to create a carbon copy of the mentor, but to allow the student teachers to construct their own understanding and framework of action via the practicum experience.

This is also when mentoring partners are most vulnerable to obstacles that may derail the relationship. As new issues arise, the relationship should be flexible enough to accommodate changes.

Each mentoring relationship is unique and must find its own path by clearly articulated goals and milestones identified during the negotiation phase.
