Observation

The simplest way of clarifying your expectations is by modelling good practice for your student teacher. One of the first steps is to teach a model lesson for their observation. Ensure that your student writes their observations down in a structured format. Click here for a suggested format for use by student teacher: Student teacher's observation guide and Notes on classroom management.

Observing your student teacher should include more than just witnessing classroom teaching in order to give feedback. Make a point of observing how student teachers portrays themselves in all aspects of school life.

Observing the student teacher in order to give feedback on teaching is a key aspect of mentoring. Keep in mind that the idea of being ‘watched’ can be a daunting experience even for a well-prepared, confident student teacher. Keep the following in mind when planning for, as well as during, observations:

  • Keep initial observation more informal to allow the student teacher to settle in.
  • Observe the student teacher teaching without intervention, except when a lesson goes beyond the boundaries of acceptance.
  • Highlight two or three pedagogical practices you will focus on when observing a lesson.
  • Take note of how well your instructions or suggestions are implemented.
  • Make formal arrangements for observing lessons that count towards assessment.
  • Use the same observation template so that they become more familiar with your expectations. Student teacher's observation guide and Notes on classroom management.
