Reviewing lesson plans

Reviewing lesson plans before and after teaching is part of assessing the student teacher’s practice teaching. Take the following into account when reviewing lesson plans:

  • Encourage the student teacher to reflect on the lesson plan prior to teaching. Use guiding questions to allow the student teacher the opportunity to reflect on possible outcomes and appropriate actions.
  • Provide feedback on the lesson plan structure (introduction, body, conclusion) and possible pitfalls or challenges.
  • If necessary, suggest changes to avoid obvious obstacles. (Experience counts!)
  • Review the lesson plan with the student teacher after teaching by asking pertinent questions:
    • What do you think worked well in that lesson?
    • How was your classroom management?
    • How would you improve the lesson if you had to present the lesson again?
