Reflection

The task of a mentor teacher may seem a little overwhelming right now, so give yourself some time to reflect.

Relook at the list of key attributes of a good mentor teacher that you identified individually and/or in your community of practice at the start of this unit.

  • Which attributes have been confirmed in the above exploration?
  • Which attributes that you did not mention originally now strike you as important? Why?
Now have a look at all the qualities below, while thinking about how they do or do not apply to you at this stage in your mentoring journey.

  • Empathy, encouragement, modelling, time set aside to plan, positive feedback, scaffolding
  • Undivided attention, valuing student teachers’ opinions, making time, making eye contact
  • Being open, being clear about expectations
  • Giving praise when due, giving positive feedback, scaffolding, offering constructive criticism
  • Able to deliver critisism while encouraging positive attitude, being realistic without destroying
  • Setting time each day to review, setting goals for following day
