Questioning: an essential skill 1
As stated in Unit 1, mentoring is about learning and not instruction. Knowing what types of questions and when to ask them are invaluable skills. |

- Closed questions: questions that require a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer are generally not useful.
- Open or non-directive questions: questions that encourage elaboration of thoughts, feelings and ideas help to stimulate creative thinking and problem solving, and show that the mentor is genuinely interested in the student teacher’s pespective.
What is it about the lesson structure that makes you so uncomfortable? or What could have caused …?
- Directive questions: questions that encourage more detailed answers help with problem-solving issues.
Which colleague are you having problems communicating with? What strategies would you use for …?
- Feeling questions: questions eliciting an emotional response.
How do you feel about that lesson now that you have taught it?
