I am a Teacher

Of course credentials, knowledge, experience and intelligence are important. However, a teacher needs to be much more than this.

You have your own beliefs about and goals for your learners and yourself, as the teacher. These beliefs and goals are your personal reference points and standards. You use them to judge what happens in your interactions with your learners. Your personal identity is central to your beliefs, assumptions, values, and practices.

Your identity as a teacher involves both how you perceive yourself and the way you portray yourself to your learners. Your identity evolves and emerges, as you interact with different social and historical contexts during your teaching life. What you know about yourself, how you perceive the nature of teaching, what you believe your role to be – all of these are interrelated. They form and transform your teacher identity.

Your identity as a teacher is part of an ongoing process, developed through dialogues, contexts and relationships. You may have different teacher positions in your identity.
