E-mentoring

In our digital age, the mentoring relationship may also happen online. The danger with online communication is that we cannot see facial expressions or hear tone. The reader of a text may misinterpret its intention, and this could lead to conflict. Discuss this with the student teacher. Agree on response times to avoid appearing disinterested.

Here are some basic guidelines:

ALWAYS:

  1. Check all e-mails from your student teacher before answering.  A later message could override the first.
  2. Be clear and specific in the subject line.
  3. Use the student teacher’s name and add a greeting to make the message more personal.
  4. Be concise, precise and polite.
  5. Write short paragraphs and use a space to separate them.
  6. Use short sentences that are easy to read.
  7. Emphasise a point using bold or italics, but don’t overdo this.
  8. If you are responding to a query, include brief extracts of the original email message, to add clarity. Use the sign ( > ) to indicate each line copied.
  9. End your message with your name.
  10. Check your spelling and grammar.
  11. Reread the message before you send it.

BUT:

  1. Avoid excessive use of capital letters. It is the online equivalent of shouting and is considered rude.
  2. Remember that your student teacher may have very different opinions and feelings to you, so if you give an opinion, provide evidence.
  3. Avoid writing about personal or relationship issues. These are best dealt with face-to-face or telephonically.
  1. Never send a message without checking that it is complete and makes sense.
