Coaching
A coach directs a person to an end result. The coach assesses, monitors and gives advice on how to be more effective and efficient. This role is focused on improvement in behaviour and the transfer of specific information or tools.
While coaching forms part of the mentoring process, the role of a mentor is far more encompassing. Mentoring student teachers is geared towards helping the student teacher to gain valuable and useful insight into the practical and affective (emotional) aspects required to be a successful teacher. |
Mentors are capacity-builders. They simultaneously enrich their own practices in both mentoring and teaching as well as the mentee’s teaching practices, which can ultimately address the learning needs of students in their schools. While coaches help with instances and incidents, mentors connect the dots and unravel the messiness of the classroom. |
