Personal and professional qualities

As you may have noted from the introductory units, mentorship is not about ‘show and tell’ and ‘giving tips’.  A teacher who serves as a mentor teacher must realize that student teachers will need both professional and personal guidance. The mentor teacher will travel the development journey with the student teacher, exploring many scenarios, establishing a collaborative relationship, and learning mutually  through reflective dialogue.

The relationship is usually a friendly one, but is not to be confused with a friendship. The aim is to enable the student teacher to develop both personally and professionally.

What are important attributes of a good mentor teacher?

In your journal, write down four key attributes of a good mentor teacher from your perspective. Give a reason for each choice.

If you have established a personal learning community (or community of practice), discuss your lists of attributes with each other. Do you have a number of attributes in common? Which different attributes mentioned by others strike you as important?
