The mentoring relationship - final words

Generally, the mentoring relationship ends officially once the student teacher completes the school experience. In this case the relationship may end even if learning goals have not been fully met. However, while some mentoring relationships are not limited by time, the completion of learning goals signals the time for closure.

Questions to guide the closure conversation with the student teacher:

  • Which learning goals were met? What is the evidence of success?
  • Which learning goals have not been met? Why not?
  • What could the student teacher do to address remaining areas of development?
  • What worked in the mentoring relationship? What did not work? What do we both learn from this?

Questions to guide the closure conversation with yourself:

  • How am I going to apply what I have learned from this relationship?
  • What have I learned about my strengths and challenges as mentor?

Now that you understand the flow of the mentoring process, Unit 2.3 will look more closely at some of the tools and personal skills you, as the mentor teacher, need to bring to this relationship.
