Pitfalls of the mentoring process

A mentor teacher must be a role model, patient listener, advocate and nurturer of possibilities. But guard against becoming a counsellor or social worker, parent, guardian, disciplinarian, gift giver or saviour! |
Be careful that the student teacher does not become dependent on you. Similarly, do not be overwhelmed by the problems and circumstances of the student teacher. Professional boundaries must be maintained. You may expect too much too soon. Be careful not to misinterpret student teachers’ responses and behaviours.
- Listen and observe.
- Ask clarifying questions.
- Do not over analyse.
- Reserve judgement.
