The initial meeting may seem awkward at first, but this is just the start. It is important to make student teachers feel welcome and not like intruders into your space.
- Be positive and friendly.
- Personalise the meeting by sharing your background and experience.
- Chat about your mutual interests, likes and dislikes.
- Ask about the background of your student teachers, their accomplishments, their failures, their fears.
- You may pick up non-verbal communication via body language and facial expressions.
Above all, remember not to pre-judge based on your personal assumptions.
