Goodenough (1963) describes seven conditions needed for identity change:
  • You desire an identity change
  • You commit to that change
  • You understand what needs to be changed
  • You know the roles and symbols of the new identity
  • You have the ability to perform the new roles
  • You have the new identities recognized and accepted by others
  • You conceive of yourself as having changed identity
