Goleman’s four competences of an effective mentor 3
A truly ‘effective’ mentor teacher has developed a mature emotional intelligence (EQ) and empathy.
EQ includes the awareness and management of ourselves (our personal competence). It also means that you remain socially aware of the impact you have on other people and are able to manage relationships (our social competence).
The mentor teacher must able to self monitor, stand back and objectively view the student teacher’s actions and behaviours. This is not possible if you are pre-occupied with your own issues and problems. |
Empathy allows us to ‘intuit’ the feelings of others, to read non-verbal clues, looking particularly for what is NOT said. This is indeed a learned skill. Focus purely on the technical and management competences of the student teacher and you are likely to miss the underlying factors behind particular behaviour.
| The effective mentor teacher must be able to sense how to give effective feedback, know when to push for better performance and when to hold back. |
