| Ms Dube is a student teacher at Rondevlei Primary. After initial curriculum and work schedule discussions with her mentor teacher, Mr Ndlovu, she is ready to teach. A few minutes into the lesson, it becomes evident that the lesson is not well prepared and presented in a half-hearted fashion. Clearly, the work is below standard. Mr Ndlovu is worried about hurting Ms Dube’s feelings. Instead of confronting and discussing the issue, he mentions it quickly then hastily moves on to discussing another point. |
- What do you think Ms Dube would think of her performance after her discussion with Mr Ndlovu?
- Why do some of us find it difficult to confront problematic behaviour in our mentees?
- Reflect on the link between sincerity and the ability to confront difficult issues.
- How should Mr Ndlovu have handled the situation?
Following on a strong and analytical mind, is the ability to confront. A mentor teacher must be able to address problems that are identified in an honest, constructive and unaggressive way. This kind of honesty will build a powerful and beneficial relationship.
It's best to be honest from the start and agree that the learning and growth process is most certainly enhanced through critical feedback. |
