Self-reflection
Much has been said about the role reflection plays in the education of student teachers. It is imperative that the student teacher is made aware of the importance of reflecting on each lesson to inform future teaching.
Make use of the following pointers to facilitate self-reflection by the student teacher:
- Encourage the student teacher to write reflective notes right after a lesson. Providing student teachers with prompts such as the following could be helpful:
- How do I feel – Satisfied? Dissatisfied?
- Why?
- What did I enjoy?
- What did I find challenging?
- Give them a prinout of the following template: Reflection on teaching (student teacher)
- Read the student teacher’s reflection notes prior to your detailed formal feedback. Discuss to what extent the student teacher’s reflective notes align with your observations.
- Ask the student teacher to reflect on how lessons learnt will guide planning for the next lesson.
Then together complete the template Reflection on teaching (mentor and student teacher). |
